Credit to Chicago

Interesting list of contributions from Chicago during the Civil War:

  • It should be remembered and made a matter of history that the first money raised in Illinois for the war was subscribed by citizens of Chicago.
  • The first armed force sent out in the West was that sent to Cairo, and it was sent from Chicago.
  • The first general in command in the State of Illinois was Richard Kellogg Swift, a citizen of Chicago.
  • The first shot fired in the West for the Union was a Chicago shot, from a Chicago cannon, trained by a Chicago boy, of the Chicago Light Artillery.

Walk-Marathon!

Walking all the way downtown is no big deal -- I do it all the time, taking the bus home. Today was different -- not only did I walk downtown but I walked all the way back home as well. Not bad!

DQTD (dumbest question of the day)

DQTD (dumbest question of the day): guy comes up to me on the street, shows me a ring (supposedly gold) and asks me where he can go to sell it. Um, right...

Chicago Pizza Is Real Pizza!

Oy, here we go again (link)...

Deepdish pizza (popular in Chicago & around the world) originally comes from the tradition of thick-crust pizza in Rome and elsewhere in Southern Italy. There they call it 'pizza rustica'.

The crust is so thick that they take a plain version (i.e. just the crust with no topping), they slice it in the middle and stick in things like eggs and bacon -- for breakfast!

Hai capito? :-)

What High School Did You Go To?

What high school did you go to? -- That's a question that someone asked on one of the Facebook groups I'm in. Now for me, it's a complicated question since originally I was 'sposed to go to Lane Tech. But I didn't -- I went to Lakeview instead. Why? Well, first, because two friends I knew (neighborhood kids) were going to Lakeview and second, because Lane Tech at the time was all boys and that seemed a bit weird. After a few more years Lane Tech let girls in as well but by then I was far gone.

Belmont Sheffield Music Festival (Day 2)

Stage and crowd at concert

Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest -- Nice weather! Nice band!

Actually for the time I was there, there were at least three bands -- one playing on the north side of the performance area and then another on the south side, etc. Nice!

My How Time Flies (Election 2004)

My how time flies! I had just gotten back to Chicago (2004) -- after 20 yrs living elsewhere (Paris, Rome, West Berlin & NYC). It was election time so I joined the Kerry campaign as webmaster for Illinois and volunteer. Did the website and banged on doors all over Wisconsin. Incredible!

Note: the site from back then is still up: http://illinoisforkerry.com/
